Country Star Chase Rice Plays the Providence Events Series at the Alex and Ani City Center Tonight

The Xfinity Center in Mansfield has been known by many names. We remember it as Great Woods, The Tweeter Center, and most recently the Comcast Center. The amphitheater in Mansfield continues to bring in big acts and this week is no different. They kick off tonight with modern rockers Blink 182 followed by Jimmy Buffett tomorrow, Prophets of Rage on Sunday and then Black Sabbath on their farewell tour next Thursday. Add a couple more big names to the mix, and you’ve got our top 5 picks of the week.

Marshall Crenshaw Tonight

Good rockin' music tonight can be found at the Purple Cat Vineyard in Chepachet where Marshall Crenshaw is appearing. Listening to Crenshaw is like catching up with an old friend. He's a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter with cult-like following thanks to his sophisticated pop sound and well known tunes like “Whenever You’re on My Mind," and "Cynical Girl." Opener Josh Grabert, leader of RI's Torn Shorts, will likely feature some selections from his Shed Sessions, a little folk blues recording that this reviewer digs. Jimmy Buffett at Xfinity

Parrotheads, your time is here. Jimmy Buffett returns to the Xfinity Center tomorrow night for his annual show with the Coral Reefer Band. And if you’ve never been, it's an experience not to be missed. Buffett continues to fill arenas with his appealing yacht rock and good time party atmosphere. Show begins at 8PM, lawn tickets still available here. Oh, and remember to fill those pick up truck pools carefully but leave the port-o-potties at home.

Blink 182 at Xfinity

The pop-punk sounds of Blink 182 return to the Xfinity Center tonight, with new guitarist Matt Skiba a recent replacement for longtime member Tom DeLonge. A new album California, released last month, rose to #1 on the Billboard charts, giving the band an unexpected mid-career renaissance. Black Sabbath at Xfinity

Next Thursday, it's the end of the road for Black SabbathOzzy Ozbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler return to the Xfinity Center as part of their final North American tour. The legendary metal band promises an entertaining evening of rock classics. Tickets are still available here. Rival Sons open at 7:30.

Chase Rice Tonight

Country maverick Chase Rice kicks off the Providence Event Series tonight at the Alex and Ani Skating City Center. Rice, a former NASCAR pit crew operator and cast member on CBS TV’s Survivor, brings his abundant energy to the stage in Providence. He’s had several songs near the top of the country charts in recent years, including "Ready Set Roll" and “Gonna Wanna Tonight”.  Opener Filmore take the stage around 6:30.
