Diana Ross Plays PPAC Thursday April 14

Stop! The "Name of Love Tour" starring the legendary Diana Ross comes to PPAC next Thursday April 14. The concert tops our slide show this week as we pick the top 5 area shows featuring (mostly) female artists. We’re spanning over 50 years of great singers and songwriters, musical genres from R&B to Country, a famous daughter, and a couple of top local performers. Laura Gibson at Columbus

Indie singer-songwriter Laura Gibson visits the Columbus Theater tonight. In 2008, Gibson was the first ever artist to play an NPR “Tiny Desk Concert.” The neo-folk musician recently released Empire Builder, her first album in 4 years, named for the cross country Amtrak train she took when she moved from Oregon to New York. She also returned to the tiny desk at NPR to debut the album a couple of weeks ago. The all-ages show begins at 9PM. Tickets are $12.

Cowboy and Lady at BVT

Cowboy and Lady are a Providence based duo made up of singer Jessica Powers and Tyler-James Kelly, guitarist and leader of The Silks. They’ve been getting a lot a buzz locally as they prepare to release their first album later this year. Check out their classic pure country sound on their website. Saturday night, they share the bill with roots singer-songwriter Grant Malloy Smith at the Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland at 8PM. Tickets are $12.

Rosanne Cash at The Vets

Country music’s “first daughter,” Rosanne Cash, will be at The Vets Sunday night for a special Firstworks RI concert featuring songs and stories from her Grammy winning album The River and the Thread. The 2014 release tells the story of the American South through her explorations and personal memories. Performing along with husband/collaborator John Leventhal, Cash brings a complete multimedia experience. Tickets are still available here starting at $28. Something else to consider - premium tickets include a post-show bourbon-tasting reception with Rosanne.

Danielle Miraglia in MA

Danielle Miraglia is a respected Boston based singer-songwriter who plays the blues the way they were meant to be played. She recently released Glory Junky, her third major album. She appears at the Dartmouth Grange Saturday night with Matt Borello, an accomplished folk artist and songwriter, who just released his second album A Dollar & A Kiss. A great evening of music awaits at the in South Dartmouth, MA. Tickets are $15 general admission ($12 for kids under 18, seniors 60 and over, and college students); $35 family admission. Music starts at 7:30PM.

Diana Ross at PPAC

Stop … it’s the “Name of Love Tour” from legendary singer Diana Ross who returns to PPAC next week. The 72 year old Motown diva is an iconic figure in the history of modern music known for such #1 hits as “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” and “Touch Me in the Morning.” She’s received countless awards including Billboard’s “Female Entertainer of the Century” in 1993. Tough to top that one! Tickets are still available beginning at $59 here. Diana's daughter Rhonda Ross opens the show.
