Boston folk/blues legend Les Sampou will be on stage at Sandywoods in Tiverton this Saturday night.

As always, there is great music around Providence this weekend. It’s tough to pick just five highlights, but here goes …

Let’s start off with Record Store Day, Saturday, April 20th. This annual event is intended to support your local “mom and pop” music shop. Exclusive RSD vinyl releases are the highlight. We'll be looking for the Black Keys/Stooges collaboration as well as Richard Thompson’s Stalford Sunday. Local participating shops include What Cheer Records on Thayer Street, who will feature a special in-store performance by The Feelies – who appear later that night at the Met.

Area concerts and club dates abound. A highlight has to be “soul-indie-pop” favorite Fitz and the Tantrums appearing at the Met on Friday, April 19th.  The critically acclaimed group is primed to break out with their new album, “More Than Just A Dream” due in May.  Note: Concert is sold out!

Sandywoods in Tiverton has Boston folk/blues legend Les Sampou on Saturday night. A veteran of the New England scene, Sampou’s Americana sound got its start in and around Boston subway stations.  She is best solo, and acoustic.

On Sunday night, April 21st,  Bettye LaVette appears at the Narrows Center in Fall River. LaVette, who recorded her first song (My Man - He’s a Lovin’ Man), over fifty years ago, is tearing up the stage on tour while reaching a whole new audience. She recently published her biography, A Woman Like Me.

Finally, a week-long celebration of local music and arts begins Monday, April 22. The Artistic Explosion Music Festival features numerous local acts at local venues like AS220 and Firehouse 13. Proceeds from all shows benefit Girls Rock RI and the RI Music Educators Association. Come out and support local music and two great causes!

Be sure to check back next Friday for your Five Music Musts.
