Old School Beats: Joe Beats

Joe Beats is one of the most talented and well-known underground hip-hop producers in Rhode Island. He has worked with a number of nationally recognized artists including RI’s own Sage Francis for their collaboration known as the Non-Prophets. Joe’s latest project is Joe Beats & Blak, combining Joe’s eclectic musical taste and old-school beats with Blak’s insightful lyrics and vocal dexterity.  You can get a preview of their music here.

Punk/Surf/Garage Rock: The Atlantic Thrills

The Atlantic Thrills combines the best skills and artistry of a number of Providence music scene veterans, and the result is a sum greater than the parts. The band combines punk, surf, garage rock, and touches of everything else they’ve ever experimented with over the years, including electronic and hip-hop music (some of the band's core members previously put out an album as Channel Zero, a more punk/metal/electronic/rap sound). Atlantic Thrills is energetic, hard-hitting, and has a thunderous rhythm section thanks to the drumming skills of the Minister of Reference.  Check out their music here.

Sweet Folk/Blues: The Whiskey Girls

The Whiskey Girls, Caroline Hecht and Rachel Jorgensen, combine beauty and talent into an acoustic, folksy/bluesy duo on the rise. When they aren’t performing their own music, you may find them bartending at one of downtown Providence’s music venues, and your best bet for catching them live is at Tazza Caffe, where they host their own music night every fourth Wednesday night. Check out some samples of their music here.
