The holidays will be a little brighter for many families this year, thanks to a donation of 1,000 turkeys from Stop & Shop to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank on Friday, Nov. 9. The delivery marks the official launch of the Food Bank’s Holiday Meal Drive, which will run through December 31. The Food Bank hopes to collect an additional 350,000 pounds of food during this drive to meet the increased demand for food assistance in Rhode Island.

“The turkeys are a terrific centerpiece to a holiday meal, and they’re also a great source of protein,” said Andrew Schiff, Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “Now we need the community to pitch in and help us finish setting the table with healthy foods that will create a balanced meal every day of the month – not just on Thanksgiving.”

Stop & Shop plans to donate a total of 21,000 turkeys to local food banks throughout the Northeast before Thanksgiving.

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank currently serves more than 65,000 Rhode Islanders every month through their statewide network of emergency food programs. One in three of those served is a child under the age of 18.

Food and Funds Contribute to Goal

Donations of non-perishable food, as well as financial donations, will help the Food Bank reach its Holiday Meal Drive goal. Every dollar raised enables the Food Bank to acquire three pounds of nutritious food for Rhode Islanders in need. Contributions can be made online at www.rifoodbank.org/HolidayMealDrive or by sending a check to Rhode Island Community Food Bank, 200 Niantic Avenue, Providence, RI 02907.

Donations of non-perishable food can be dropped off every weekday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Food Bank’s facility at 200 Niantic Avenue in Providence.  Most needed items include: peanut butter, canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, dried or canned beans, pasta, rice, breakfast cereal, and canned soups, stews or chili.

Holiday Meal Drive Open House Set for Saturday, Dec. 15

The Rhode Island Community Food Bank will hold a Holiday Meal Drive Open House on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at its offices at 200 Niantic Avenue in Providence. Individuals, families and groups are invited to bring their donations directly to the Food Bank, take a tour of the facility, sort their donations, and enjoy some hot chocolate and cookies. Celebrity guests include Miss Rhode Island and Miss Teen Rhode Island. Scavenger hunts for children and adults will also take place.
