Create, rehearse and present original plays all in one day? Yes, it can and will be done on Jan. 8 by the Contemporary Theater Company.

Beginning at 8pm, the nonprofit traveling theater troupe will raise the curtain on its sixth annual 24-Hour Play Festival at the South Kingstown High School Auditorium. The festival brings together a talented slate of writers to develop original short plays during the wee hours of the morning. Directors and actors take the new lines and run with them, presenting that evening a completely original show sure to deliver an endless series of laughs.

From creation to curtain call

“The work our teams create during one single day is truly remarkable,” Artistic Director Christopher J. Simpson said.

Initially presented by the Contemporary Theater Company in 2006, the festival has grown into the company’s signature event. This year the company will present six short plays staring more actors than ever before and draw on the large talent pool from around southern Rhode Island.

“It amazes me how much this festival grows each year,” Simpson said. “If you thought it was good last year, this one is going to blow you away.”

Tickets for the Jan 8 at 8 pm show are $12 and available at the door, online here or by phone at 218-0282. The South Kingstown High School Auditorium, 215 Columbia St, Wakefield. The auditorium is handicapped accessible.
