10 Things To Do Before Summer’s Over

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Even though the official end of summer is still more than a month away, the barrage of back-to-school sales and Labor Day blowouts irrevocably speed up the sense that the end is near. Time is ticking, so make the most of your days spent soaking up the best the season has to offer. Here are our Top 10 Not-to-Miss Picks:

1. Have a sunset cocktail on the Verandah at the newly reopened Ocean House in Watch Hill.

2. Go stand-up paddle boarding. It's summer's hottest trend and you’ll be sporting Jennifer Aniston arms in no time. Rent boards at Island Surf & Sport in Middletown, (86 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown, 841-5160), located just off Third Beach (lessons are $50/hr, rentals $35/hr). Check out our report 6 Ways to Go Wild for more.

3. It’s a Providence staple by now, but blink once and there will be no more WaterFire nights left. Be sure to check the schedule and pencil one in.

4. Take the ferry for a day trip or weekend jaunt to Block Island (bonus points for sipping a sunset mudslide at The Oar).

5. Grab some popcorn and settle in at the corner of Westminster and Union Streets in Providence for Movies on the Block. Free showings every Thursday evening at dusk, through the end of September. Click here for the schedule.

6. Don a derby-worthy hat and pack a sophisticated tailgate (or a pair of denim shorts and bucket of KFC - it doesn’t matter) and enjoy the ponies at Newport Polo in Porsmouth, Saturdays now through the end of September (note: Sept matches move to 4 pm).

7. Enjoy clam cakes on picturesque Nanaquaket Pond, at Evelyn’s Drive-In in Tiverton (bonus points for following up with for dessert at Gray’s Ice Cream at Tiverton Four Corners).

8. Thanks to the hard work of local farmers, our produce baskets runneth over. Visit a local farmers market and be inspired by the Ocean State’s bounty.

9. Run, walk, bike or blade the entire East Bay Bike Path. We won’t tell if you stop for a Del’s along the way…

10. Catch a flick at the Rustic Tri-View Drive-In in Smithfield, the last open air theater in Rhode Island.
