The careful, artful hand weaving of Amy C. Lund creates pieces that make a housescape cottage-perfect. With a shop on Etsy to match her lovely studio in Tiverton Four Corners, this artist is worth visiting with in person or online. GoLocalProv caught up with her to chat about being a low-tech artist in a high-tech world.
Tell me a bit about how you started weaving.
I became interested in textiles by watching handspinning at historic Sturbridge Village as a child. There was an old spinning wheel in my family that I practiced on to make yarn, which I later learned to knit. I was fascinated with the history of the textile mills and fabric production, of which we have so much in our area, and took a weaving course at Slater Mill in Pawtucket in the 1980s. After that it was just practice and patience which led me to a Master's of Science in Textiles from the University of RI in the 1990s and brought me to weaving full-time today in my own business.
Why are you in Tiverton? What's important about the location to you?

where everyone knows each other. My first shop space was in Adamsville, Little Compton, and a few years ago I "moved into town" in Tiverton Four Corners to be with other businesses in a more public atmosphere.
In an increasingly high-tech world, how do artisan activities like yours play a role?
I feel my work reminds people of the importance of objects in their lives and having things that are well-made and designed for the purpose at hand, while also being artistic and unique. I also remind them of the fact that they can take the time to enjoy these things and not always be in a rush, or live in a disposable society. My work is classic, made with traditional methods, yet fits in contemporary styles.
