Smithfield’s Matt Kuhar Gunning for State Tennis Title

Top-seeded player and Smithfield High School junior Matt Kuhar will take on Barrington High School senior Cam Voight this Sunday at 12 p.m. in the state tennis singles final at Slater Park in Pawtucket, R.I.

These two players know each other well, as each were named First Team All-State in 2012. Posting a 14-7 singles record as a junior last year, Voight was knocked out of the state tournament in the quarterfinals by Kuhar, 6-4, 6-0. Kuhar has lost just one match in his three years at Smithfield. Unfortunately, his only loss came in the 2012 state final to Ponaganset freshman Jared Donaldson, 6-2, 6-2, who is not playing in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League this year to chase his professional dreams.
Kuhar's coach Derek Snow knows how much this individual title means to him, but he also knows that Kuhar is focused on winning a team championship and having a positive impact on his teammates, as he looks to lead by example.

He is always willing to work with other players on the team and give them tips or advice, that many times I can't even give them. He is a special talent and a fantastic individual."
Kuhar coasted through the state tournament, defeating Lincoln's Cory Dipaola in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-1, and seems like a man on a mission, determined to capture the state crown this time around.
"Matt is looking forward to the singles title match,” Snow said. “He has played Cam Voight a few times in the past few years and although he's always won, it is usually a battle. Matt is playing the best tennis of his life right now and he's still improving."
