Mount to Play at Fenway - Raise Funds for Cathedral in Springfield, MA

Tuesday, December 13, 2011

Defending Rhode Island State Hockey Champions Mt. St. Charles Academy will take the ice for a cause in January at the home of the Boston Red Sox. Mounties are scheduled to play Massachusetts’ Cathedral High School under the lights at Fenway Park on January 2 to raise money for tornado victims in the Springfield area.

Support Cathedral in Springfield, MA

Cathedral High School sustained serious damage in the June 1 tornado. Part of the school's roof was ripped off, windows were blown out, and a wall collapsed. This fall, classes were relocated to the vacant Memorial Elementary School in Wilbraham. Much to the disappointment of Cathedral’s senior class, the 2012 graduation ceremony will not take place at its traditional location on Surrey Road, where repairs may take up to two years. The game at Fenway is an opportunity for the team to help people similarly affected by the storm and – win or lose – make a memory it won’t soon forget.

Mount and Cathedral are no strangers to one another – the Springfield, MA team travels to Woonsocket each December to participate in the annual Mt. St. Charles Tournament during Christmas break. In 2010, Mount came out on top with a 6-2 victory over Cathedral. This year, the teams will face off in the tournament’s first round – a preview for their big night under the lights.

New England Powerhouse

The Mt. St. Charles boys’ team is a New England hockey powerhouse, considered one of the best in the entire country. They have won Rhode Island’s Division 1 Championship 42 times since 1932, including a 26-year streak from 1978-2003. They are four-time defending champions since 2008. To-date, 20 alumni have been drafted for the NHL.

The Mounties finished the 2010-11 season with a 27-1-2 record. Though four leaders in goals and assists graduated last spring, five of the top ten will return this season.

Ranked 11th in the state after the 2010-11 season, the Cathedral is the only Division 1 hockey program in Western Massachusetts. They finished last season with a 14-10-1 record and graduated only two of the team’s leaders in goals and assists. The Panthers have won the MA Division 1 State Championship twice in the past decade – once in 2003 and again in 2009.

The game is scheduled to take place at 7:30 pm, Monday, January 2 at Fenway Park. Tickets will cost $10.
