Top-seeded East Greenwich advanced past Middletown High School, 10-5, in the first round of the Division II boys' lacrosse playoffs on Thursday afternoon.

It wasn't easy for East Greenwich, which led just 5-4 at haftime, and needed a late push to knock off the upset-minded Cavaliers (4-10, 4-9 Division II). The Avengers outscored the Cavs 5-1 in the second half.

Senior attacker Kyle Carosotto led East Greenwich (14-1, 13-0 Division II) with 2 goals and 2 assists. Carosotto put up 51 points (37 goals, 14 assists) during the regular season.

Fellow senior attacker Ethan Zink scored 2 goals and picked up 1 assist. Zink led the team with 45 goals and 31 assists this season and finished second in the state in scoring with 76 points during the regular year.

Sam Feinberg also put up 2 goals and added an assist, and Andrew Gehlmeyer scored twice for the Avengers.

The Avengers ran roughshod over the rest of Division II en route to a 12-0 regular season record, and blew out Middletown, 11-0 in the teams' last regular season meeting at East Greenwich on May 3. East Greenwich also used a 6-1 second half push to pull away from Middletown, 10-4, in their season opener on April 3 at MHS.

Jack Payette and Colin Waitkun each tallied a goal for East Greenwich.

Kevan Sullivan and Armand Mazzuli each scored 2 goals for the Cavaliers. Ned Murphy added a goal and Joe Mahony picked up an assist.

East Greenwich will advance to the semifinals to take on fourth-seeded Providence Country Day, which defeated fifth seed Wheeler, 13-8 in East Providence on Thursday afternoon. PCD head coach Ed Votolato expects East Greenwich to bring its best, but said that doesn't phase the Knights.

"We're just going to go out and play well and see what happens," Votolato said.
