Tufts Health Plan hosted a forum of well-recognized health care experts, providers, policy makers, and business leaders this morning to discuss how quality measures can help Rhode Islanders achieve better health outcomes and control health care costs. The event, held at the Providence Marriott, included leaders of statewide health initiatives in a panel discussion; among them, Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth Roberts; Laura Adams, President and CEO, Rhode Island Quality Institute; Christopher Koller, Rhode Island Health Insurance Commissioner; and Edward Quinlan, President, Hospital Association of Rhode Island along with James Roosevelt, Jr., President and CEO, Tufts Health Plan .

Improving Health Outcomes in RI

Tufts Health Plan's newly-released issue brief, A Conversation Starter on Access, Quality and Cost Mitigation, describes the national environment and identifies efforts toward health care delivery reform, including the benefits of evidence-based medicine in reducing costs and improving patient outcomes, the potential of the patient-centered medical home model, the increased utilization of health information technology (HIT), and the need for a societal shift toward prevention and wellness rather than disease.

Panel Procures Discussion

The panel was moderated by Rhode Island Health Insurance Commissioner Christopher Koller, and according to Brian Pagliaro, senior vice president of sales and client services at Tufts, who also spoke at the event, the morning was an overwhelming success. “The theme of the forum was quality–how quality matters and improves outcomes which can help mitigate health care costs,” said Pagliaro. As a community partner and by collaborating with providers, he explained, Tufts continues to engage and be committed to Rhode Islanders. The health plan currently ranks second nationally in quality, and first in Rhode Island.
