Support an awesome cause by registering for the Girls on the Run 10k, 5, and family fun run on June 1st.

Girls on the Run Rhode Island, a non-profit program that encourages healthy lifestyles among preteen girls, will hold a 10k, 5k, and family fun run event on Saturday, June 1, 2013. Marking the end of the organization’s 2013 spring season, the second annual event will begin at 9am at the Temple to Music at Roger Williams Park. The races are open to the public–women, men, girls, and boys are all welcome to participate and corporate teams are encouraged.

Founded in 2011, Girls on the Run Rhode Island is an independent council of Girls on the Run International. The organization inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. The after school program, for girls aged 8-13 years old, combines training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and physical development.

During the 2012-13 school year, Girls on the Run Rhode Island has served nearly 200 girls with its after school program at sites including the Boys and Girls Club at Fox Point and South Side, John Hope Settlement House, Bay View Academy, Lincoln School, Fargnoli Park, Rocky Hill School, Gordon School, Vartan Gregorian Elementary School, Meadowbrook Elementary, and Studio 47 at Barrington Pilates. The 10-week curriculum culminates in the girls completing a 5K event.

“Watching our girls and their supporters cross the finish line is one of the most rewarding experiences of our program,” said Kathy Crain, executive director of Girls on the Run Rhode Island. “After 10 weeks of preparation, an event like this shows the girls to set big goals for themselves, prepare for challenges, and celebrate successes. We hope the entire Rhode Island community will join us.”

Organized as a fundraiser for Girls on the Run Rhode Island, this year’s race is being generously supported by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, GTECH, Granite Electric Supply, and FGX International.

Additional support is being provided by Performance Physical Therapy, Fuel Belt, Chip Riegel Photography, Stew Milne Photography, Barrington Printing, Tri-Mom Productions, and Glee Gum. Proceeds and donations directly support program costs and financial aid for girls who cannot afford the program fees.
