It's high-tech, high-fun, and old-fashioned holiday partying... all at once. On Dec 8th, social media enthusiasts from across Rhode Island will gather at McFadden’s Restaurant & Saloon for a night of networking and charitable giving. @PROVtweetdrive takes the form of a traditional toy drive but leverages the influence that social media and social networking has when used to power a positive cause.

The price of admission: one new, unwrapped toy. All contributions will be donated to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Then, to participate, guests will Tweet live from the event by using the trending hashtag #tweetdrive as well as including mentions of @PROVtweetdrive, @TweetDrive2010 as well as the event sponsors and beneficiary. The overall goal is to make the Tweet Drive’s charity initiative something that everyone is talking about - both on and offline.

Social media for social good

The event is sponsored by Astonish Results, a digital marketing, training, and consulting company. Using social media to harness exposure for social good is something that Astonish Results Community Manager, Alicia Collins is extremely dedicated to.

“By participating in the Providence Holiday Tweet Drive," she said, "we are able to be a part of something much larger than ourselves; that in itself is a major benefit - but to also show the public that social media isn’t just a fad, that it truly is a prevailing public relations and marketing device, that we can use to make a difference, makes our sponsorship all the more important,” Collins stated.

By providing a night of tech-savvy networking and charitable giving, the sponsors hope to make the holiday season a little brighter for patients at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The Hasbro Holiday Wish List is accessible online and allows guests to choose gifts most needed and recommended for the young patients.

@PROVtweetdrive is one of many holiday “tweet ups” occurring across the country beginning in Boston on Monday, Dec 6th and ending in New York on Thursday, Dec 23rd. The national program was designed by Temple University student, Harrison Kratz, who believes strongly that strength relies in numbers.
