With more than 17% of US children considered obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), nutritional and physical health of children is now more critical than ever. To help famlies get healthier, a  Rhode Island company has partnered with nutrition expert Deborah Kennedy to launch a digital platform for parents to use.

BuildHealthyKids.com offers parents a broad array of interactive tools to assess their children’s health through a 12-step assessment plan (Take 12) that guides parents through a easy but comprehensive evaluation of their children’s health. This tool is the first complete online tool of its kind and is based on guidelines established by the USDA, the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The site also features interactive tools for parents to use the Take 12 assessment and put it into practice through tools to plan meals, track fitness, save money and compute Body Mass Index (BMI).  Each interactive tool is user-oriented, and can be printed for easy tape-to-the-refrigerator reference.

Making it easier for parents to translate diet & exercise into long-term health

“Our Mission at BuildHealthyKids.com is to make it easier for moms (and dads) to understand how their child’s diet and activity level impact their long term health," said Kennedy. " We know that getting your child to eat the right way, and to get the right amount of activity and exercise, can sometimes be stressful and frustrating for both parents and children.”

“We know that for many families the resources are diverse and confusing," said Larry Wesson, CEO of MEDport, LLC, the creators of Fit & Fresh brand products. "Much of it provides measures, but not the steps.” Moreover, key learning segments are supported by video that allows parents to gain guidance via the Web.

"This site is dedicated to taking the confusion and conflicting data out of the decision-making process for parents," said Kennedy. "We are proud to produce an online tool that is easy to navigate and comprehensive."
