The new and expanded Tockwotten, which will open in December 2012.

As momentum builds for the opening of the new $52.3 million Tockwotton on the Waterfront, the non-profit organization has been named to the 2012 Honor Roll in U.S. News & World Report’s list of “Best Nursing Homes,” released this week.  The annual listing by U.S. News recognizes top-rated homes in all 50 states and offers important guidance to families and healthcare providers caring for people in need of a nursing home.

U.S. News & World Report examined more than 15,500 nursing homes to select 39 with perfect performance ratings in 2011.  With four quarters of perfect five-star ratings from the Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in all three areas—health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care—Tockwotton distinguished itself as one of the nation’s best care communities.

Highest possible rating in every category

“Only one home in 400 is able to meet Honor Roll standards by getting the highest possible rating in every category for all four quarters of 2011,” says Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor.

“Our staff is honored to learn of this recognition,” said Tockwotton Executive Director Kevin McKay.  “We’ve worked hard to create an atmosphere that is built on respect and satisfaction for employees and residents alike.  The results of this decade-long initiative are now paying off with happy residents and employees, and distinctions like this one from U.S. News.”

How the rankings work

U.S. News’s evaluation of nursing homes is based on data from Nursing Home Compare, a consumer website run by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The government agency sets and enforces standards for nursing homes (defined as facilities or portions of facilities enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid that provide 24-hour nursing care and other medical services). Homes earn an overall rating of one to five stars, as well as up to five stars in each of three underlying categories: health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care. U.S. News updates each nursing home’s ratings data quarterly.

When Tockwotton on the Waterfront opens in December, it will feature assisted living and memory care, in addition to nursing home accommodations.  The new waterfront community will continue the century-long tradition of compassionate care that has won accolades for Tockwotton’s staff and will be complemented by a new $52.3 million waterfront building with 156 private rooms that will each feature their own private bath, Wi-Fi, cable TV and telephone service.  Care will be coordinated and seamless, enabling residents to “age in place” without the trauma of having to move elsewhere to receive the services they need. In addition, the new community of care will enable couples to remain together while receiving different levels and types of support.

Three distinct, yet connected sections of the new community will provide the space needed to offer a broader range of services, and all of the modern amenities that residents and their families expect today:

  • An assisted living residence with expanded common areas and modern amenities.
  • A memory-support assisted living household will provide specialized care and therapeutic activities for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments.
  • An innovative nursing home design that will incorporate a household model where residents can maintain their life-long routines within small, autonomous “households.”
