Timothy J. Babineau, MD, has been approved as the third president and CEO of Lifespan, effective August 15, 2012. Lifespan's board of directors voted unanimously to approve Dr. Babineau, who is currently president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. He will succeed George A. Vecchione, who announced in October that he would be leaving Lifespan later this year after 13 years at the helm. He will succeed George A. “These are unprecedented times of change in health care and we need a talented leader who has the vision and expertise to guide Lifespan’s future strategic direction,” said Scott Laurans, chairman of Lifespan’s board of directors. “All the candidates were exceptional and came from major academic medical centers in extremely competitive markets and several were physicians who had deep administrative experience.”

Dr. Babineau will guide the system’s strategic direction, build upon its already strong quality and safety program, and continue to focus on system integration to provide our patients with the best possible care experience. He will continue to work toward a closer alignment with physicians in order to better meet the needs of patients and to provide the most effective and efficient use of each health care dollar.”

Babineau’s appointment comes after an extensive eight-month national search that was led by a 13-member search committee comprised of board members, physicians and representatives of higher education. The search committee gathered input from dozens of individuals including senior leaders, employees, physicians, board members, community leaders and other key stakeholders to identify the opportunities and challenges facing Lifespan, as well as the qualifications and leadership qualities for the next president.

Babineau became president and CEO of Rhode Island Hospital in October 2008. In 2010, Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital announced their intention to merge and since that time Babineau has served as president and CEO of both hospitals. In the past several years, Babineau has overseen the creation of The Norman Prince Neurosciences Institute at Rhode Island Hospital, the formation of the Lifespan Physician Group, and the combined Rhode Island Hospital/The Miriam Hospital Cardiovascular Institute and Total Joint Center.

Prior to his 2008 appointment, Babineau was the senior vice president and chief medical officer at the University of Maryland Medical Center and School of Medicine in Baltimore, Md., where he led the effort that resulted in the medical center being named one of Leapfrog’s Top 50 Hospitals in the country for patient safety and quality, in 2006 and again in 2007. Having brought to Lifespan a strong background in patient safety, Babineau has been instrumental in a number of safety and quality initiatives at Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals.

Babineau also has broad administrative and academic experience -- he is a professor of surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and was vice chairman of the division of surgery, surgical residency program director, director of the center for minimally invasive surgery at Boston Medical Center and surgeon-in-chief and medical director for the Boston Medical Center Surgical Associates at Quincy Medical Center. He has been a trustee for the University of Massachusetts and a member of its Audit and Finance Committee.

He has excelled throughout his career; most recently he was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems.
