NEW: 2 RI Physicians In Trouble Over Drugs
Friday, February 17, 2012
Two RI physicians have been disciplined by the State's Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline for improper actions regarding controlled substances, the RI Dept of Health (HEALTH) announced today.
Fredy P. Roland, MD, a physician with offices in Pawtucket, was found to have been prescribing controlled substances in ways that didn't meet "standards of accepted practice," according to HEALTH. Further, the physician is under investigation for dispensing medication through the mail to individuals who were not patients. Dr. Roland may no longer prescribe certain controlled substances until he completes a course of remedial education that the Board will accept, including a Opioid Prescribing Course.
Afshin Nasseri, MD has been suspended from practice for five years from August 2011 for the second time, after it was discovered that the physician had been improperly administering injections of Medazolam (Versed), a sedative indicated primarily for sedation, to 11 patients for treatment of muscle spasms, panic attacks, anxiety, claustrophobia, racing thoughts, abscess removal and severe needle phobia. According to HEALTH, Dr. Nasseri had not supervised administration properly, hadn't kept separate controlled substance logs, and failed to account for 4 missing vials of the drug.
