National Women’s Health Week: Making Women’s Health a Priority

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

National Women’s Health Week is this week. Rhode Island women can take part in a wide variety of events that focus on making their health a top priority. Seminars and workshops throughout the week are being held to educate women about steps they can take to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases.

According to the CDC, the top three causes of death in females of all ages are heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Women are often the caregivers for their spouses, children, and parents and forget to focus on their own health. However, research indicates that when women take care of themselves, the health of their family improves.

Data compiled by the National Office on Women's Health indicates that just over 85 percent of women in the United States report having a routine checkup within the past two years. The statistics in Rhode Island are above average, with approximately 93 percent of women in the state having yearly physicals.
