Miriam Surgeon Marlene Cutitar Named RI Woman Physician of the Year

Marlene Cutitar, M.D., a surgeon at The Miriam Hospital, has been named the 2011 Woman Physician of the Year by the Rhode Island Medical Women’s Association (RIMWA).
A trained general surgeon whose solo practice focus now includes the evaluation and treatment of benign and malignant breast conditions, as well as colorectal screenings, Cutitar is the immediate past president of the Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the New England Surgical Society and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

“Dr. Cutitar is not only a skilled and gifted surgeon but she is also a kind, compassionate and dedicated caregiver, which I’m sure her patients would wholeheartedly attest to,” said William Corwin, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer, The Miriam Hospital. “We are very proud to call her a friend and colleague for the past 19 years. On behalf of the entire Miriam Hospital community, I congratulate her on this well-deserved honor.”
Cutitar, a resident of Warwick, serves on the boards of the American Medical Women’s Association, the Rhode Island Medical Society, Brown University’s Office of Women in Medicine and Science and RIMWA. She is also a clinical assistant professor of surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, where she received her medical degree and completed her surgical residency.
Celebrated on RIMWA's 30th anniversary
“We are very excited to honor our own Dr. Cutitar as the 2011 Woman Physician of the Year on RIMWA's 30th anniversary,” said Ekaterini Tsiapali, M.D., president of RIMWA. “With her work as a surgeon, educator, and RIMWA board member, Dr. Cutitar has made a difference throughout our community. She has left her mark in the lives of the patients she serves, in the RIMWA community, and in the careers of the women health care providers of Rhode Island. We look forward to celebrating her accomplishments!”
Cutitar will be honored on Tuesday, May 3.
