The American Heart Association and America Stroke Association have announced that Timothy Babineau, M.D., Lifespan's President and Chief Executive Officer, will serve as the chair of the Southern New England Heart Walk, set to take place on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Station Park in Providence.

The Southern New England Heart Walk brings thousands of Southern New England families, organizations and businesses together for a fun day of cardiovascular wellness on an annual basis.

“Through education, encouragement and sheer will, we as a community can take that giant step toward our own heart health while inspiring others to do the same. The 2016 Southern New England Heart Walk is an opportunity to take that first step. The event is a fun-filled activity for families, companies and community organizations to rally around a great cause, while also taking advantage of free resources like heart-health information, CPR demonstrations, health screenings and more," said Babineau.

As chair of the event, Babineau will manage a volunteer executive leadership team that is charged with recruiting businesses, community groups and individual walkers while also helping to raise $750,000 to support the American Heart Association's mission of building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

“The impact of heart disease and stroke touches the lives of virtually everyone, especially in a community as tight-knit as Rhode Island. Not only is heart disease the leading cause of death in our state but heart disease and stroke contribute to the diminished quality of life of thousands of Rhode Islanders. Fortunately, research has shown that 80 percent of cardiac events may be preventable through lifestyle changes. Each day, for example, physicians and staff of Lifespan’s Cardiovascular Institute work with at-risk individuals who have made that proactive decision to be heart healthy," said Dr. Babineau.

Babineau earned a bachelor's degree from the College of the Holy Cross and a medical degree from the University of Massachusetts. Babineau also earned a master's degree in business administration from Boston University.
