Hasbro MD Carol Lewis Honored by Kids Count

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

RI Kids Count's honored physician: Carol Lewis, MD.

Carol Lewis, M.D., a pediatrician and the director of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Refugee Health Clinic, has been awarded the Covering Kids Award by Rhode Island KIDS COUNT, a statewide children’s policy organization that works to improve the health, economic well-being, safety, education and development of Rhode Island children.

Lewis and other community leaders were presented with the award at the Rhode Island KIDS COUNT 11th annual Celebration of Children’s Health luncheon.

"Unfailingly compassionate and compassionate care"

“The impact of the work that Dr. Lewis has done on behalf of the hundreds of refugees who arrive in our state every year is immeasurable,” said Robert Klein, M.D., pediatrician-in-chief at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.  “She provides unfailingly compassionate and comprehensive care for people who need her at their most vulnerable time.”

Lewis was one of the founders of the Hasbro Children's Hospital’s Refugee Health Clinic, which serves the health needs of refugee children who arrive in Rhode Island from countries worldwide.

The clinic officially opened in 2007 to standardize and streamline the initial health exam and follow-up care of refugee children arriving in Rhode Island. The clinic is a medical home for refugee families, and a place where they can receive care that is comprehensive, collaborative and cost-effective.

The clinic has served the health needs of refugees from numerous countries, including Liberia, Burundi, Eritrea, Iraq, Somalia and Nepal.

Each year, Rhode Island KIDS COUNT recognizes elected officials and community partners with Covering Kids Awards for their contributions to increasing access to health insurance coverage for children.

Here's Lewis discussing the clinic.
