Hasbro’s Patricia Flanagan Named Top Maternal Doc

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Patricia Flanagan, MD, chief of clinical affairs for Hasbro Children’s Hospital, has been named the recipient of the 2011 Silver Rattle Award by the RI Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (RI HMHB). Each year, RI HMHB recognizes one leader in the field of maternal and child health to receive the Silver Rattle Award who has “shaken up the system” on behalf of mothers and children in Rhode Island.

"We are honored to recognize Pat this year as our Silver Rattle Awardee for all her contributions to the field of maternal and child health as a pediatrician, researcher, teacher, mentor and advocate," said Andrea Ferreira, former co-chair of the Coalition and Senior Director of Development for Lifespan.

Flanagan, an expert in teenage parenting and adolescent medicine, was selected for her years of leadership and commitment to the field of pediatrics, and health care for teen parents and their children. She was honored at the annual May Breakfast of the Coalition.

Leader in health care for teen parents and their children

Flanagan is also the director of the Teens with Tots Clinic at Hasbro Children's Hospital, where she leads a team that provides social and medical services to nearly 300 mothers under age 16 and their babies, following their lives for up to five years. As director, Flanagan oversees primary care for adolescent parents and their children, and addresses such issues as child care, parenting and contraception.

Flanagan has worked to educate the community about adolescent pregnancy and high-risk parenting, serving as president of the National Organization of Adolescent Pregnancy, Parenting and Prevention from 2000 to 2003. She served on the Rhode Island Governor's Commission on Early Intervention and was a member of the reorganization of the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families and the Rhode Island Attorney General's Task Force on Sexual and Violent Physical Abuse of Children. She has also developed a curriculum for teen parents with infants in the neonatal intensive care unit for the March of Dimes.

Pioneer in New England's first lead center

In the late 90’s Flanagan helped design and shape New England's first comprehensive lead center. More recently, Flanagan led the creation of the Medical Legal Partnership, a collaboration between Hasbro Children's Hospital, Rhode Island Center for Law and Public Policy, Brown Medical School, Roger Williams Law School and Rhode Island Kids Count. The program makes legal services available to low-income families at Hasbro Children's Hospital. She has also led the creation of a state TEEN Pregnancy Coalition.
