It's time to grab your sunscreen and head to your favorite Rhode Island beach for some sun and fun. While you're out catching some rays, why not make it a point to get a free skin cancer screening?

This summer, local health organizations and ABC 6 are sponsoring a series of "Sun Smarts 2010" events at beaches all over the state.

If you stop by a Sun Smarts booth at one of the scheduled events listed below, you'll receive a free skin cancer screening from a Lifespan doctor. You will also walk away with some potentially life-saving safe sunning information, including what SPF to use when it comes to using sunblock.

For those who think that an SPF 15 product is going to do the trick, Charles McDonald, MD, chief of dermatology at Rhode Island Hospital advises that you double that.

"The minimum SPF I recommend is 30," McDonald says. "For outdoor activity, use SPF 45 because you'll be perspiring, which dilutes the sunscreen. For those who are very fair, who have red hair, blue eyes and freckles, add a total block that contains titanium or zinc."

Don't use last year's bottle of sunscreen. It's time to toss it and buy a new one. Sunscreen loses its effectiveness as it ages, especially if it's exposed to extreme heat.

There are five Sun Smarts events this summer, beginning June 18:

Friday, June 18, 2010
Scarborough Beach, Rhode Island (Rain date: June 25)

Friday, July 9, 2010
Middletown (2nd Beach), Rhode Island
(Rain date: July 16)

Friday, July 23, 2010
Misquamicut Beach, Rhode Island (Rain date: July 30)

Friday, August 6, 2010
Horseneck Beach, Massachusetts (Rain date: August 13)

Friday, August 20, 2010
Narragansett Beach, Rhode Island
(Rain date August 27)

The Sun Smarts events are being presented by ABC6 in partnership with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Rhode Island, The Miriam and Newport hospitals and University Dermatology.
