Don’t Miss: RI 2nd Annual Esophageal Cancer Walk/Run
Friday, June 07, 2013
It's almost that time of year again! Lace up for a good cause at the 2nd Annual Esophageal Cancer Walk/Run. Taking place on June 15th in Warwick City Park, the event will be hosted by the Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation and is the only event dedicated to esophageal cancer in New England.
With a 400% increase in diagonses over the last 20 years, esophageal cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in the country. The American Cancer Society estimates that this year there will be 17,990 new cases of esophageal cancer diagnosed and about 15,210 deaths due to the disease. Moreover, almost all cases are fatal because unfortunately, its symptoms are often detected late. Those who do not succumb to the disease tend to suffer lower qualities of life after surgery. Risk factors for the cancer include obesity, smoking, excessive drinking, and even frequent heartburn.
The only nonprofit in the region that concerns this particular cancer, the Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation was established in November 2011 to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support research in hopes of finding a cure. With the help of Rep. Patricia Serpa, April has been recognized by the state as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month for two consecutive years.
