Mangia. The whole gang(ster) wants to make sure you enjoy the sandwiches as Wise Guys Deli.

A new deli has opened up on Atwells and while the food is worth the trip, the playful ambience is worth noting as well. Just step over the chalk outlines on your way in the door and you'll see what I mean...

The menu of Wise Guys proudly proclaims, “Our name is a parody but our food is no joke”.  Opened by Atwells restaurateur Gianfranco Marrocco with a kitchen led by chef Gianfranco Campanella, Wise Guys promises to deliver Italian deli fare without taking itself too seriously.

Talk about atmosphere

The day I stopped in, three large TVs were playing out well-worn scenes from The Sopranos, Good Fellas and The Godfather while large, playfully cliché sketches of everyone’s favorite drama ‘gangsters’ took places of prominence on the walls. Just like the Dons they depicted.

Talk about tasty

Wise Guys offers an incredible 25 featured sandwiches. If your arteries can take it, try the .38 Special. This house favorite which may be the ultimate late-night-craving reward, pairs a double cheddar cheese burger with slices of hot pastrami and chipotle pepper roasted garlic aioli. You got all that? Your doctor may not be happy, but your taste buds certainly will love the kick from this chipotle sauce.

For something a little more traditional, try the Prime Minister. Delicate house-made meatballs are topped with a savory San Marzano tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. If you judge an Italian restaurant by its sauce, then Wise Guys can compete with anyone in town.

Talk about prices

The sandwiches are huge and very reasonably priced, with most listed around $8. If you are looking for something a bit smaller there is a still a deli case filled with daily specials. Italian tuna salad, antipasti, chicken cutlet or grilled vegetables might be just what you are looking for.

Wise Guys is open late on weekends so there is plenty of opportunity to get to Atwells and try some great food… and an episode of the Sopranos.
