New Top 10 Wieners Named in RI

There's a new ranking in town. Does your favorite wiener joint make the list? Photo: ForkintheRhode.com

The longest-running battle for bragging rights in Rhode Island just got a little more heated. Like, all the way heated.

Local food bloggers ForkintheRhode.com has named the top 10 New York System wiener restaurants in Rhode Island. How many of these are on your list?

Top 10 Wieners

Ben's Chili Dogs 158 Broadway Newport
Cosmic Steak, Pizza & Weiners 1141 Post Rd Warwick Warwick
Ferrucci's Original New York System 1246 Main Street, Arctic West Warwick
Nick’s New York System 280 Cowessett Ave West Warwick
Olneyville N.Y. System 18 Plainfield Street Providence
Rod’s Grill 6 Washington Street Warren
Sam’s New York System 6 Freeborn Street /Sandy Lane Warwick
Santoro's Pizza 687 Tiogue Ave Coventry
Timmy's Restaurant 644 W Shore Rd Warwick
Wein-O-Rama 1009 Oaklawn Avenue Cranston

These, by the way, are in alphabetical order. Passionate food bloggers David Newell, Scott Friedman, David Tagliatela and the 48 judges they enlisted to the cause (who visited 50 restaurants with judging sheets) did not rank them. But rate them they did. All wieners were ordered “all the way” (meat sauce, chopped onion, mustard and celery salt), and each ForkintheRhode.com judge based his or her results on the following scoring categories: Appearance, Steamed Bun, Wiener Texture, Meat Sauce, Onions and Overall One-Bite Taste.

A symbolic, beloved local food

"Since ForkinthRhode is committed to spotlighting extraordinary food in ordinary places (in RI), we couldn’t have chosen a more symbolic and beloved local food," said Newell. "We knew so much had been written about the most popular NY System restaurants, but nobody had published a 'complete' statewide critique. We were hoping for some local unsung heroes to rise to the occasion – and a few did!"

Newell, diplomatically, refrained from naming his favorite. "Let’s just say if a restaurant delivers a freshly grilled wiener, on a properly steamed bun with freshly chopped onions and a flavorful meat sauce – I’m good to settle in for 4 all-the-way with a large fries and ice cold coffee milk."
