Thayer Street’s Paragon Closed After 23 Years in Providence

Thayer Street restaurant Paragon has closed.
The departure of the restaurant and bar located at the intersection of Thayer and Angell Streets marks the latest shift for the commercial strip adjacent to Brown University.
“Paragon closes its doors after 23 years. We thank you for all your patronage. Stay tuned for new openings,” Paragon wrote in a Facebook post.

As GoLocal reported in October 2017, the Metrelis family — which owns Paragon, Andreas, and Mile and a Quarter — was embroiled in controversy when the “Penthouse” opened in their building on South Water Street in Providence.
A new nightclub featuring dancers and stripper poles has opened in one of the most historic areas of Providence. The new club called, The Penthouse, is located in the space above the Mile and a Quarter restaurant which was previously occupied by the controversial Loft club.
The new club is located close to one of Providence’s top Italian restaurants, Bacaro, right next to upscale realtor Lila Delman, and literally across the street from the new innovation center I-195 corridor.
The historic building is owned by a company controlled by Andrew Mitrelis. He and his family also own Cafe Paragon, Andreas, and the now-closed Mile and a Quarter.
The Metrelis family also used to own Spats, which closed at its last location on Angell Street in 2014.
Recent Departures
In the fall of 2017, Kartabar on Thayer Street closed. Owner Philippe Maatouk opened a new establishment, Layali, in downtown Providence.
Au Bon Pain closed on Thayer in December 2016, replaced by “By Chloe.”
Johnny Rockets closed in March. 2017; with “B. Good” opening up in its place.
