NEW: Local Chefs Make Super Bowl Bet With NY Chefs
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
The Super Bowl match-up for this weekend just got a little more heated… as in in-the-kitchen heated. Two teams of high-profile chefs have taken sides with their hometown football teams and placed a bet that has the culinary world watching. And laughing.
The "Super Bowl Restaurant Smackdown" details were revealed to Food & Wine's Chris Quinlan, and one of the chefs repping the Pats, Rhode Island's own Matt Jennings of La Laiterie and Farmstead, confirmed the bet's details late last night.
The teams
Playing for the New England Patriots, it's Jennings, plus Jamie Bissonnette from Boston's Toro and Coppa, Tiffani Faison from Sweet Cheeks, and Gabriel Frasca of Straight Wharf and Provisions.
For the New York Giants, it's Harold Dieterle of Perilla and Kin Shop, Lee Anne Wong of Vynl, and Michael Ferraro of Delicatessen.
The stakes: "maximum humiliation"
As Food & Wine's Quinlan points out, "this wager is not about money, it's about maximum humiliation." The terms are as follows:
For seven consecutive days, the representatives of the LOSING TEAM must:
Wear the opposing team’s jersey in their restaurant. The jersey cannot be removed during work hours for any reason.
Wear a Statue of Liberty hat (Boston) or a lobster hat (NYC) in their restaurant. The hat cannot be removed during work hours for any reason.
Feature pastrami on rye (Boston) or New England clam chowder (NYC) prominently on their menu with the following wording:
“In honor of the greatest football team on earth the Patriots/Giants, [Restaurant name(s)] is proudly featuring [name of dish]."
Tweet a picture of themselves in their hats & jerseys eating the featured dish in their restaurant all seven days.
The WINNING TEAM will hand deliver the jerseys and hats to the losing teams and taste the featured menu item.
Let's cheer for the Pats (and Jennings) this Sunday. Then all head to those New York restaurants next week and ask for some tasty New England clam chowder.
