NEW: Al Forno Named Top 25 Pizza Spot in US—Food & Wine

Thursday, May 10, 2012

The legendary pizza of Al Forno is once again lauded, this time by the editors of Food & Wine Magazine.

The latest laurels to land at the culinary feet of Providence arrived today, as the editors of Food & Wine magazine have just named their Top 25 Pizza Spots in the US… and Providence's own Al Forno Restaurant sits among the best of the best.

"Top chefs and fabled bakers are among the new breed of pizzaiolo who are just as fanatic over the temperature of their ovens to how nearby their ingredients come from," says the magazine. "They're elevating pizza around the country from greasy pies in cardboard boxes to inspired creations with crackly, charred crusts topped with house-made cheese and charcuterie."

The best pizza in the country

Citing a range from "new guard spots—including a Bay Area pizzeria that uses locally-milled flour—to the nearly-century old East Coast institutions started by the original pizzaiolo obsessives that loyalists still (rightfully) love," Food & Wine honored Al Forno for launching "a new era of ambitious cooking in Providence [in 1990] with their thin-crusted grilled pizzas topped with superfresh ingredients." The editors singled out Al Forno's Margarita Pizza (with house-made pomodoro, fresh herbs, two cheeses and extra virgin olive oil) as the signature item.

Al Forno shared New England honors with the legendary Santarpio's Pizza in Boston and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven.
