If you’re in need of healthy dose of good drinks and great food, there are great BYOBs places all over Providence.  With just a little planning, you can create your own great mixer.

Cambodian Cure All: Angkor

For a fantastic Cambodian meal, visit Angkor restaurant at its new location on Traverse Street on the East Side. Try the legendary Nam Yaa Soup—or Medicine Soup—a soothing blend of lemongrass, ginger, and garlic, or try their oily and delicious Street Noodles—fried flat noodles with veggies.  For a brighter taste the Banh Hoi, a bed of steamed noodles with a surprising addition of mint, bean sprouts, and a sweet peanut sauce for dipping.  Pair the noodles with a nice blonde beer, like Hoegaarden, that will hydrate you without detracting from the flavor.  You can pick up around the corner at Campus Fine Wines on Brook Street. Angkor, 10 Traverse St + Campus Fine Wines, 127 Brook St, 621-9650.

Crepes and Cocktails: Pho Paradise & Phonatic

Don’t let the pun turn you away from this pair of delicious Vietnamese restaurants in Providence.  Start with Sizzling Crepes, a Vietnamese country-style pancake that’s sizzling, seasoned with finely sliced scallions.  Next, order the My Tho Seafood Noodle Soup—a tangy blend, heaping with crab, shrimp, squid, garnished with cilantro and basil. If the weather’s too warm for soup, the also-fresh grilled Lemongrass Chicken, served is a good go-to. Pair your meal with a French Rabbit Chardonnay – a white with hints of vanilla.  Pho Paradise, 337 Broad St + Fruit Hill Liquor, 342 Broad St; Phonatic 165 Angell St + Spiritus Fermenti, 220 Meeting St, 273-1999.

Argentinean Food & Drink: Los Andes

With portions as large as the mountains of their namesake, the meals are filling and delicious. Though the décor is nearly comical, the restaurant has a light-hearted atmosphere.  Be sure to try the Pique a lo Macho—sautéed steak stripes with chorizo, filled with tomatoes, jalapeños, tomato wine broth, all over a huge bed of thickly cut French fries to soak up the juices. Pair your meal with an Argentinean Malbec, like Finca Las Moras, but beware – the closest liquor store doesn’t have the widest selection. Los Andes, 903 Chalkstone Ave, 649-4911 + Acme Liquors, 1023 Chalkstone Ave, 274-2337.

Good Medicine: Apsara Palace

Apsara Palace is the perfect go-to pan-Asian restaurant in the East Side. They restaurant has something for everyone: a mix of Chinese, Thai, Singaporean, Cambodian, and Malaysian. The Bee Bhong is a particularly perfect trifecta of salty, sweet, and savory.  The sparsely-decorated restaurant gets crowded easily—a testament to its delicious dishes—so keep your group small.  The portions are large, the price is low, and the tea is complimentary.  If you feel like a drink on the stronger side, stop by the legendary pharmacy/liquor vendor East Side Prescription Center, close by on Hope Street. Apsara Palace, 783 Hope St, 831-4722 + East Side Prescription Center, 632 Hope St, 751-1430.
