Food justice is about to get funky. The Fertile Underground  -- an artist-driven eco-collective in Providence -- will host its Kickstarter Release Party on Friday, March 4th to help fund the organization's new local, natural "grocery with a conscience." Refreshments, live music, art and inspired dialogue are all in store for party-goers, and the main event -- the premier of Fertile Underground's Kickstarter Video, an online fundraising venue to generate support for the store -- is sure to inspire artists, musicians, and food-lovers alike.

From garden to grocer

The store, which will be located on the first floor of 1577 Wesminster St -- a hip, new "green-construction" building developed by the WBNA and Spurwink, Inc. and supported by a United Way Community Impact Grant -- is slated to open this June. In addition to an agro-mural design created by member artists, it will feature local produce from RI farms (including discounted produce from the Underground's garden), fresh-baked local goods with both vegan and gluten-free options, and a bulk section featuring reduced packaging and general household items.

The Fertile Underground Garden is a member-operated, small urban farm that functions similarly to a CSA, with the harvest divided among the members. Membership costs $100 dollars for the year, which entitles members to fresh produce and herbs on a weekly basis. Membership will be offered at the release party, scheduled from 7-10pm at 109 Summer St. in Providence.
