Cocktail Insider: RI’s Hidden Tequila Hot Spot

Saturday, October 15, 2011

After indulging in the basics of Tequila last week, now it is time to get down to business, open some bottles and get tasting. One of the best places to go that is off the beaten track is Don Jose Tequilas located on distinctly un-Mexican Federal Hill. But: Tequila lovers will tell you that here is where you'll find a great selection of more than sixty different 100% Agave Tequilas ranging from simple Blancos to massively flavorful Extra Anejos. Don Jose Tequila has only been around since 2000 but has already made its mark on the Mexican food and Tequila scene winning more than a dozen local and regional food and beverage awards.

Something for everyone

With Tequilas ranging in price from $6 to $35 per glass, there is truly something for everyone. Among my favorite is Corralejo Blanco ($8), served lightly chilled. Chilling the Tequila softens the alcohol and increases the flavors which include those of pepper and lemon peel. The ($9) Herradura Reposado is a great sipping Tequila with its smooth texture and integrated vanilla flavors.

Critic's pick

For the ultimate Tequila experience I recommend the full bodied El Jimador Anejo ($10). This Tequila, which is among the best selling Tequilas in Mexico (that should tell you something), has been aged in French Cognac barrels for 12 months imparting delicious caramel flavors and spice.

Even the margaritas are better

If you aren’t ready to do Tequila solo, I recommend you ease into it by tasting one of Don Jose’s award-winning margaritas made with fresh lime juice and Agave syrup. Or catch the nuances of Tequila in one of Executive Chef Maria Hernandez’s Tequila infused dishes like the ‘Camarones a la Tequila’, which consists of large succulent shrimp in a Tequila lime sauce served with rice and beans ($16.95). Enjoy.

Don Jose Tequilas, 351 Atwells Ave., Providence, 454-8951.

Great food. too! Authentic Mexican. You'll never step into a Taco Bell again.
