WJAR 10 and Verizon FIOS are in a raging battle. FIOS is scheduled to drop Channel 10 from its offering starting on January 1, 2012. The impact for WJAR would be dramatic - the number of FIOS subscribers in Rhode Island and the coverage area of Southeastern, MA that would be affected is approximately 100,000 households.

During the Sunday night NFL game, WJAR 10 ran a message across the bottom of the screen warning viewers of the pending FIOS cut. Moreover, the station has launched its own micro-Web site to draw attention and capture sign ups.

"Verizon will drop NBC 10 on Jan. 1, 2012. That means you'll miss some of your favorite programs including NBC 10 local news, "Today", NBC's primetime and NFL football. We regret that Verizon FiOS viewers will not be able to watch NBC 10 as they usually do, but there are cable and satellite providers, and NBC 10 is free over the air," claims WJAR.

The battle is similar to a battle that raged over many years between LIN-Media's WPRI-12/Fox-64 and Cox in the Rhode Island market.

According to Verizon spokeperson Phil Santoro, Manager of Media Relations, "We're working hard to expedite closure of the negotiations in order to eliminate any temporary interruption of service to our customers when our current contract expires on December 31st. Verizon continues to negotiate with Media General Broadcasting to reach an agreement on contract terms that are reasonable and in our subscribers’ best interest, so that our customers can continue to receive the best possible television service and content they have come to expect."
