So who's got the gilded coffers in the Northeast?  Overall across the U.S, the Walton Family in Arkansas takes the country's top honors at $152 billion with the Wal-Mart fortune, with the Koch family a "distant" second at $89 billion.

In Massachusetts, the top net-worth family is Boston's Edward-Johnson clan, landing at 5th overall in the country at $39 billion.  Following in Massachusetts are families who owe their fortunes to supermarkets and convenience stores -- and across New England, that includes construction and apparel companies.
