RI’s Most Exclusive Sports Club Carnegie Abbey Goes Up for Auction
Friday, November 02, 2018
When the premier sporting club Carnegie Abbey was first marketed in 2000 the initiation fee was $120,000 per member and the price went up from there.
Today, the Club House and related building are assessed at $4,371,300 by the Town of Portsmouth.
“Less than a year after opening, Carnegie Abbey, the exclusive and outstanding new $40 million golf course and sporting club retreat created here by British entrepreneur, conservationist and America's Cup challenger (1983), Peter de Savary, will host a challenge between the Ryder Cup captains on June 19, 2001,” claimed Carnegie Abbey’s website at the time.

The Carnegie Abbey event will be televised in October on Shell's Wonderful World of Golf on ESPN,” said the club.
Founder Peter de Savary said when launching the club, “We try to achieve a distinctive lifestyle while enjoying traditional Scottish style golf and other sporting activities within the spirit and camaraderie of good fellowship."
He later sold the site and a number of financial issues hit the club.
Today, the Carnegie Abbey Club markets itself as "a private sporting estate committed to the art of living well. The location is classic New England-overlooking deep blue water across open fields and dappled countryside, offering a sanctuary for golf, tennis, equestrian and maritime pursuits. Members expect luxury, experience comfort, and enjoy fine dining, as private yachts tug on their moorings to the west and the setting sun casts its golden glow across Narragansett Bay.”
The bidder’s tour of the auction is scheduled for November 27, 2018.
