In looking at the May sweeps ratings numbers hot off the press – you see some pretty interesting things.

First off, it is May – the days are longer – the sun (in theory only of course!) is shining longer and people are doing more stuff outdoors and therefore not propped up as much in front of the tube compared to the February ratings period. That said, there are some real surprises here, and both Channel 10 and Channel 12 have reason to celebrate this holiday weekend.

Before we break down the numbers – here are the headlines:

·         Channel 10 wins all newscasts
·         Channel 10’s 7pm news continues to be strong
·         Channel 12 makes big gains in the morning with its new anchor team
·         The race at 6pm is as tight as anyone can remember between 10 & 12
·         Channel 6 continues to struggle

Ok, so here are the numbers (each rating point = approximately 6,200 households watching that particular station at a specific time):

6am:
Channel 10:  7.72/rating
Channel 12:  4.23/rating
Channel 6: 0.74/rating
Notes:
As you can see, while Channel 10 wins the time slot Channel 12 shows some impressive numbers - up about 60% year to year.  And in a time when TV stations are losing viewers, that is significant for sure.

6pm:
Channel 10:  7.7/rating
Channel 12:  5.75/rating
Channel 6: 1.38/rating
Notes:
This is the closest the race at 6pm has been between Channel 10 and Channel 12 since the early '90s.  This is something to watch for in the next ratings book - will 10 pull away or wil 12 edge even closer?

11pm:
Channel 10:  6.15/rating
Channel 12:  5.20/rating
Channel 6: 2.02/rating

Channel 10 7pm newscast:
This continues to build as a very strong product for Channel 10.  Clearly there is an audience here at 7pm.  In May, the rating number was 5.8, and this newscast continues to be counted in some of the highest rated 7pm newscasts around the country.
