Valicenti will replace Tara Granahan and Andrew Gobeil. Granahan will stay on as an assistant program director for the station. Gobeil will not be retained.

The political blog Rhode Island’s Future was first to report on the changes.

Valicenti is expected to remain at Channel 10.

“Rhode Island has been waking up to WPRO since the days of Salty Brine,” Valicenti said. “It goes without saying that hosting the WPRO Morning News is a real honor for me.”

“This is going to be an excellent program! Gene is an expert at delivering the news, and with the unique talents of Bill Haberman and the WPRO and ABC news teams this show will be unmatched during the morning commute,” said Cumulus Media market director Barbara Haynes.

This isn’t the first shakeup at the station over the last year. Program director Paul Giammarco left for a position with WSAR in Fall River. Giammarco has since left that position.
