New RI Salad Dressing Company Makes Healthy Omega-3s Tasty
Friday, August 03, 2012
There is now a tastier and all-natural alternative to fish oil capsules--Rhode Islands’ Omega-3 Dressings, launched this month by entrepreneurs Carder Starr and Gary Ranaldi. Consuming a delicious salad topped with this dressing may reduce the risk of heart disease, and is certainly a real alternative to supplements.
Ranaldi brought food industry experience to the start-up, while Starr has experience making supplements for pets. "It was a natural for us to combine our talents and give it a shot," Starr said. The two felt that there had to be a tastier and easier means for people to consume their omega-3 fatty acids, beyond the large capsules. After months of testing and formulating, they perfected a combination of flavors that taste great while providing a therapeutic amount of the omega-3 fatty acids without having a “fishy” taste. The entrepreneurs "tested it out with some unsuspecting friends," Starr said.

Each two-tablespoon serving provides the equivalent of about two and a half capsules of highly purified omega-3 fish oil, Starr said. "We wanted to make sure that there was enough fish oil to be of use," he said, adding that it wasn't just a "token" amount to boost sales. "We want people to be healthy from using this product," he said. "We're not making wild claims." The company purifies the oil and tests it for heavy metals and toxins.

The American Heart Association recommends omega-3 fatty acids to help prevent coronary heart disease--but not all omega-3 fatty acids. They specifically recommend the EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) forms. The ALA (Alpha-linolenic Acid) form of omega-3 fatty acids from plants, such as flaxseed, is not recommended for these heart-health benefits. The ideal and the most abundant forms of EPA and DHA are found in purified fish oil, which Omega-3 Dressings uses.
Made in Rhode Island
RI's Omega-3 Dressings are manufactured and bottled in the state. Each flavor is--and will be--named after one of the many islands or coastal areas of RI. The first four all-natural salad dressings include Block Island Balsamic Vinaigrette, Newport Honey Mustard, Rose Island Raspberry Vinaigrette, and Plum Beach Ginger Plum.
The dressings are available throughout RI in health food stores, specialty food stores, and independent supermarkets, including Little Rhode Foods in Foster. More information about these heart-healthy dressings can be found on their website at www.omega3dressings.com.
The company is located at 1305 B Kingstown Road, #7, Peace Dale, RI.
