NEW: People’s Credit Union Donates Backpacks to Local Kids

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Local kids will march into school this week with backpacks full of school supplies, thanks to People's Credit Union. Last week, People’s employees donated and delivered over 100 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center in Newport, Reach Out LLC in North Kingstown and Good Neighbor Kitchen in Bristol.

The backpack drive was coordinated through the Credit Union’s Community Enhancement Committee (CEC).  The Credit Union raised money through dress down days throughout the summer to buy the backpacks and school supplies for the students.  Local businesses, including Staples, also donated supplies for the drive.

Double the success for 2012

Now in its seventh year, the drive made a major jump in 2012, as People’s Credit Union was able to donate almost double the amount they were able to last year. “So many students in the communities we serve are in need and go without the necessary school supplies.  We are happy we can once again help make their school year a better one,” said Tracy Glover, Chair of the CEC.

People’s Credit Union serves members through six locations in Bristol, Middletown, Newport, North Kingstown, Portsmouth and Wakefield.
