Merrill Sherman brings deep experience in business and in the RI community to the board at BCBSRI.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced that Merrill W. Sherman is the newest member of the nonprofit health insurer’s board of directors. A notable name in the Rhode Island business community, Ms. Sherman brings over twenty-five years of top level corporate experience and deep roots in the community to her board role.

“The appointment of Merrill Sherman to our board speaks to the board’s commitment to inviting not just astute business leaders, but members who are deeply involved and committed to the Rhode Island community,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and chief executive officer for BCBSRI. “We are very grateful for Merrill’s willingness to join our board.”

Ms. Sherman will sit on two committees on the BCBSRI board: Finance, and Health, Market and Strategic Initiatives. She brings a track record of visionary leadership, strong financial performance and the ability to build exceptional management teams. Ms. Sherman is the Principal of Sherman Consulting, LLC. Earlier, she served as president and chief executive officer of Bank Rhode Island and its publicly traded parent company, which she co-founded and where she worked for 16 years. She also served as president and chief executive officer for two other community banks in New England.

Ms. Sherman sits and has sat on a number of non- and for-profit boards including The Providence Journal Company, Rhode Island School of Design, Crossroads Rhode Island and Johnson and Wales University. As a result of her professional and personal accomplishments, Ms. Sherman has received numerous recognitions including Providence Business News’ Rhode Island’s 25 Most Influential Business Leaders in the past 25 years in 2011; U.S. Banker’s 25 Most Powerful Women in Banking in 2010; and March of Dimes, Rhode Island Chapter’s Citizen of the Year for 2007.

Ms. Sherman received her bachelor’s degree from Mount Holyoke College and her law degree from the University of Denver College of Law.
