Last night, Channel 12 began broadcasting in HD and also showing off a brand new set.

You can check out the set for yourself with pictures of the new set right here on GoLocal.

The last major set redesign for the Providence CBS station was about 10-years ago. In 2008, the station did what you would call a re-freshed look to the set. Like Channel 10, who also unveiled a new set recently, Channel 12 had the challenge of getting the work done behind the scenes while doing news casts each night. News Director Joe Abouzeid says in addition to the set, the station has invested in a control room as well. "We used FX, a well-known national set company for construction. They helped us bring the unique characteristics of Southern New England to life. It took six months from initial design to setcompletion. There were probably ten versions until final design."

Abouzeid says the challenge in doing the new look was to make sure it was modern - but also have it be crisp and not over-the-top with too many bells and whistles. " In my opinion, our set, including our stunning massive video wall, is the brightest and most visually appealing one in the market. It has always been and will always be our content that sets us apart, including our Target 12 team and our terrific meteorologists."

Becuase the station is in HD now, (12 was the 3rd statin to go HD in this market), special care has to be taken with the on-air talent. Reason being is that with the new technology comes a new reality for on-air talent: HD hides nothing. So while it makes colors more vivid and the picture crips - it can also show shall we say the not so flattering part of the aging process. "The anchors have all met with HD make-up experts. We’vebrought in nationally known HD lighting experts. The cameras of today are verytrue-to-life."

Other News Nuggets:

Charlie Sheen who? Overnight raings for CBS and here at home with Channel 12 are out of sight for the return of "Two and a Half Men". Last night, ratings for the show on WPRI were through the roof for the 9pm to 9:30pm. The “new” show with Ashton Kutcher had a 20 rating. Each rating point represents about 6,200 households so the show had nearly 125,000 households watching here. Nationwide—close to 28-million people watched the show.

No major changes on air – but the takeover of Citadel radio stations (WPRO-AM, 92Pro-FM, Lite Rock 105) to Cumulus is apparent when you listen. The top of the hour station identification on WPRO-AM now includes a tag line that identified it as a Cumulus station.

NBC 10’s Patrice Wood will be recognized for her good work related to finding adoptive homes for children. Patrice will attend the “Angels in Adoption” ceremony on October 4th in Washington DC after being selected by Representative Jim Langevin. For the past 11-years Patrice has produced a segment on Channel 10 called “Tuesday’s Child” which helps to match children with permanent adoptive families.

Channel 6 has now formally said goodbye to long time sports anchor Don Coyne. Coyne and Ken Bell had been the longest running sports team in the market.  This followed the exiting of Jim Corbin who had been at the station for some quite some time doing weather.
