A night with the Providence Geeks is always worthwhile, but this week's Geek Dinner on Wednesday, March 16, gives a sneak peek at an extremely exciting high-tech center coming to Rhode Island: the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM).

"To my mind ICERM is the biggest - and yet, still largely unknown  - local Geek news of the year," said Geeks co-founder Jack Templin. ICERM, which was announced officially just this month, will "make Providence an important hub for the study of computational mathematics,” according to Senator Jack Reed.

Only one of eight in the nation

The new home for ICERM will be Brown University, which won a highly competitive $15.5 million award from the National Science Foundation to form a national mathematics research institute —one of only eight in the nation. Scholars from around the world will come to ICERM to explore the intersection between computation and mathematics.

ICERM will officially open in fall of 2011 on the top two floors of 121 South Main Street.

From cryptography to social networks

Hot topics that the ICERM community is expected to tackle, said Templin, include cryptography, cybersecurity, personalized medicine, search engines and social networks. In addition, he said, ICERM has partnered with Google, IBM, and Microsoft, so that ideas can flow and result in new ventures.

The Geeks are hosting Jan Hesthaven, a Brown Professor of Applied Math, Director for the Center for Computation and Visualization, Associate Director of ICERM, and, said Templin, "an all-around-brilliant good-guy," to give an overiew of ICERM, including ways that the institute and the local community (Geeks and others) might work together.

Geek Dinners are always open to the public. For more details check the blog, here. You can also RSVP on Facebook and spread the word.

Providence Geeks Dinner, Wed March 16th, 5:30-8:30pm,
