The LOOK: The New Bang

Saturday, February 02, 2013

From the First Lady to celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, the big bang is bigger than ever. How can you make it work for 2013?

He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.

Bring in this year with a bang--the look is back and all the rage from our fabulous First Lady Michelle Obama's unveling at the inauguration to Jennifer Lopez and other celebrities. I feel the big bang is here to stay for Lucky 13/2013.

A second part of the big bang trend? Ombré--a coloring style that is from the French word that literally means "shaded like a gradient." Roots remain dark while the rest of the hair becomes lighter mid-shaft using a balayage technique. The ombre bang is where it's at this year, so let's get you eased into it, in time for your new spring look and on to the sun kissed glow of summer skin.

1. Get to know the big bang.

Get Googling on bangs and better yet, pick up some high fashion mags when looking for an extreme change such as bangs.  I would purchase Italian, French or English mags, especially this time of year. With Fashion Week upon us, they are a little ahead time-wise, so their pics are already published for new looks in hair and clothing. (We'll see more looks from the US from Fashion Week in NY next week.)

2. Talk to your stylist about the look for you.

Don't rush into just letting someone cut a bang into your overall hair design without seriously discussing and sitting with the idea. You can even purchase a clip-on bang to try the look on for size. Remember, it is a commitment to keep the perfect bang. Frequent trims are crucial, but most stylists offer free bang adjustments throughout your look. (I know I do because i want my creation to stay relevant and fresh whilst out on the streets for all to see!)  Discuss this with your style guru--he or she would feel the same.

3. Be brave!

If you have been stuck in a hair-do rut, then why not stir things up with a bang? It reads fresh youthful and flirty. Remember the ever-sexy Bardot with her coveted bangs-- she remains the icon that starlets seem to always refer to when incorporating the big bang.

Here's to bringing your look together with a bang!

From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
