The LOOK: Hair Myths Debunked
Saturday, October 15, 2011
He was the lead hair stylist on Sex and the City 2, he made Anne Hathaway fabulous on film, and he's GoLocalProv's weekly style expert. Frank Barbosa, the Newport-based celebrity stylist, brings red carpet perspective to hair, makeup, and overall style.
This past week I overheard a conversation while at a family function, and it went something like this:
Fashionista #1: My stylist says I don't need haircuts because I'm growing my hair long like America's Next Top Model.

Well, it seems the only ridiculous one in that conversation was the Fashionista #1's stylist because if she was paying attention in class she would know the scientific breakdown to inform her long-haired-dreaming client! Allow me to explain.
Our hair grows out of its bulb (in our scalp) at 1/4 to 1/2 inch a month, and it also splits from our ends up our shaft of the hair at the same rate. Which means our hair never really grows long and healthy without our frequent trims.
While I'm busting that myth, here's another I hear all the time: If you pull one gray hair out, two more grow in its place. If that was the case we would have a special shop catered to little old gray haired ladies paying for us to pull their hair out in order for their hair to grow back double in diameter! It's just not true.
Here's a third myth: Conditioning hair makes it greasy and flat. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Conditioner conditions the hair and seals the cuticle; it's up to you not to allow your hair to get greasy and flat. A good education on hair care from the right stylist will have you healthy, washed, conditioned, and full of bounce and body.
Myths, shmyths. Nothing is impossible when it comes to healthy, gorgeous hair. xx
From Sex and the City 2 to Rachel Getting Married, from The Sorcerer's Apprentice to Bride Wars, Frank Barbosa has styled some of the biggest celebrities in film, TV, and theater. He's just finished styling on location alongside film stylist Alan D'Angerio on the film, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, starring Jennifer Garner. He's been in the industry for 17 years, moving from hip neighborhoods in Chicago, to Boston's Newbury St, to Bellevue Avenue in Newport. He maintains that his real passion, though, is being behind a salon chair at Frank Antonio Hair and Makeup in Newport.
