RISD Fashion Gala to Feature Designer Nicole Miller

Thursday, April 07, 2011

This is the spring's hottest fashion ticket.

"An Evening with Nicole Miller,” a gala evening from the RISD Museum Associates, will honor one of Rhode Island School of Design’s most talented and successful graduates. With 15 free-standing Nicole Miller boutiques and clothing available in 1,200 specialty stores, the designer remains a powerful, creative force in fashion worldwide.

The event coordinates with the RISD Museum’s upcoming special exhibition, Cocktail Culture: Ritual and Invention in American Fashion, 1920-1980. As Cocktail Culture spans the 20th century, said organizers, “An Evening with Nicole Miller” focuses on a revolutionary designer known for trend-setting contemporary cocktail couture.

Runway, auctions, and yes, cocktails

The evening's events include a capsule of Miller’s spring collection choreographed and danced by Festival Ballet Providence as well as a connoisseurs’ live auction packed with one-of-a-kind experiences with an emphasis on style. Crowned by Nicole Miller Boutique shopping sprees in New York and Miami with luxury accommodations at New York’s Plaza Athenee and Miami’s Fontainebleau hotels, the auction also includes limited edition wine packages and rare whisky and cigar tastings. And then there will be the designer's favorite cocktails and a menu inspired by her aesthetic.

Feminine, sexy, refined

A favorite of Hollywood and fashion’s elite, Miller is known for body-conscious cocktail dresses and elements of whimsy and surprise. Her signature is feminine, sexy, and refined.

The gala is a perfect complement to this ground-breaking exhibition. Dually trained at the Rhode Island School of Design and Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, Miller's fine arts background in painting and sculpture at RISD inspired a spirit of freedom and creativity. The designer said she has drawn inspiration from a wide range of influences, including cinema, contemporary art, mid-20th century architecture and exotic cultures.

"An Evening With Nicole Miller," Friday, May 6, 2011, 6:30pm, Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design, Chace Center, 20 North Main St, Providence. All proceeds benefit the Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design. For ticket information contact Pamela Kimel, 454-6505 or pkimel@risd.edu
