Hydrate

You will hear it again and again: one of the best things you can do for super healthy skin is to hydrate so be sure to drink 6-8 glasses (about 48-64 oz.) of water a day. Water helps to flush toxins from the inside and also plumps the skin, which makes you look younger. In addition to your H2O, try Neaclear Liquid Oxygen Facial Cleanser ($11.99, Ulta) which increases skin hydration by 35%.

If an “aspirin mask” sounds like an old school apothecary remedy because it is! Smash up some aspirin and mix with water to form a paste and apply to the skin for about ten minutes then rinse. Aspirin is salycylic acid, the same stuff you see in everyday acne creams, gels and cleansers. Not quite in a mortar ane pestle mood? Try Clean & Clear Advanatge Acne Spot Treatment ($6, drug stores) or Mario Badescu Drying Lotion ($17, The Apothecary Newport). Both contain salycylic acid that helps to kill acne at its base.

Sleep

Proper rest or lack thereof totally affects your skin so be sure to get at least 6-8 hours of sack time per night. The skin cells renew at night so the more “beauty rest” you get, the better. Need some help? Slather on Olay Age Defying Intensive Nourishing Night Cream ($9, drug stores) or NUDE Skincare Advanced Cellular Renewal System ($92, Sephora, Providence).

Shield

Shielding your skin from harmful UV rays and free radicals (i.e. pollutants in the air) is key to keeping a clear, smooth complexion. Wearing SPF on a regular basis will help protect your skin and antioxidant-rich products will revive it from environmental damage. We love Neutrogena Antioxidant Day Lotion SPF 20 ($18, Target) or Peter Thomas Roth ‘Retinol Fusion AM’ Moisturizer SPF 30 ($78, Nordstrom, Providence).

Clean

Clogged pores are a breeding ground for bacteria that can lead to skin irritation and breakouts. Be sure to remove ALL makeup and wash your face thoroughly to get rid of dirt and oil. Try Ava Anderson Non-Toxic Makeup Remover Pads ($14.95) to remove all traces of makeup and follow with Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser ($33, Facing Thayer, Providence).

Indulge

Treating yourself to a spa facial is not only a mini vacation, it is also excellent for your skin. A trained esthetician can give you a full skin analysis, assess any issues you may have and give you a cleaning you could never do at home (extractions anyone?) Go see Sienna Ianelli of Sienna Skin Studio in Cranston for a full skin makeover or head over to Glow Spa in Bristol for their Fountain of Youth Facial ($125).
